We've been busy in our garden . . . look what we have been up to . . .

 

 

 

 

 

Thank you Room 1 & 2 - Picket Fence

Room 1 & 2 are busy trying to tidy up our gardens.  They have decided we need a little picket fence around the gardens outside the hall to tidy it up and keep people off the gardens.  They have got the fence posts and drawn their designs on them, and are now painting them ready to put into the ground.  I can't wait to see how fabulous it looks.  Watch this space . . . .

Week 6 & 7

We have been so busy the last couple of weeks.  There are so many activities the children have been running at lunchtimes.

The gardens are really dry so there has been a lot of watering needed.  Children have been on the bicycle peddling hard to pump the water out of the tank. 

And the lavender has been harvested and little lavender bags made to enjoy the aroma of a little longer. 

The girls in the butterfly house have been busy collecting caterpillars and ensuring they have a safe place to transform into butterflies.  They have now started tagging them so that they can be tracked and we can understand more about where they go and what happens to them over winter.

Stream Clean Up

In week 4 Kaipatiki Project ran a stream clean up.  Brett Stansfield from Environmental Impact, Mrs Wilkins and Mrs Nicholson went down to clean up the stream after school.  We were very surprised with the rubbish we found.  There were orange cones and what looked like tantalised wood from the building of the stream bridge amongst the rubbish found in the stream.  The Council has been contacted to come and collect the rubbish.  This week we intend to write to the Council to see if they can talk to their contractors as some of this rubbish may have been left by them.  :(

Mrs Nicholson cut back all the cutty grass to make it easier for us to access the stream next time we go down to monitor the stream.

Week 3 & 4.

Last week we were very busy cycling to gather water from our tank and water the gardens.  They are very dry.

We continued with our seed gathering and placed sheep pellets into the tree seedlings to fertilise them. 

There are so many bananas on our palm that we began to harvest them.  They were delicious.  We also found grapes to fill our platter also.

This week we made the bananas into banana smoothies and banana muffins.  Yum, yum.

First Enviro Lunchtime for 2020

Congratulations to Manuka and Rimu for a fantastic first Enviro lunchtime.  Our Komiti Kaitiaki students did us proud.  Today they ran several activities for the children within our school to participate in.  There were fun activities like the camouflage game down in our forest as well as several maintenance activities.  Here is just a wee snippet of  some of the maintenance activities:

Plastic in our compost

This week we looked through our compost before adding it to our garden.  We were horrified to find so much plastic in it.  Lots of the little plastic stickers on our apples and other fruit don't decompose.  Please take them off your fruit at home before bringing your fruit to school.
